Dog worm medicine: how do I treat worms?

The short answer

Worms seen? A deworming tablet, dosed by your dog's weight, treats them.

The right worm medicine depends on the worm; your vet picks tablet and dose.

What applies to you?

Match what you see. Then check the worm tablet notes.

FIRST · MATCH WHAT YOU SEE

Worms seen in
your dog's potty
A video call is the right first step. Have your dog's weight, deworming record and a photo of what you saw ready.
Worms in vomit, or a pot belly
on a thin puppy
Signs of a heavy worm load. Speak to a vet before any tablet, above all for a vomiting or swollen-bellied puppy.
Rice-grain bits on
your dog's potty
Usually flea tapeworm. Not every worm tablet covers tapeworm, so ask; treat your dog's fleas too, or it comes back.
Dog's loose motion with
mucus or fresh blood
Can be whipworm. Speak to a vet; blood with weakness or dehydration means a clinic now.
Adult dog looks fine,
no worms seen
Most adult dogs with a light worm load show nothing, so keep to the deworming schedule. A stool test shows whether it is working.

THEN · ABOUT THE WORM TABLET

Which worms the
deworming tablet covers
Routine tablets target roundworm, hookworm, whipworm and tapeworm, but not every tablet covers tapeworm. Heartworm needs a separate preventive.
Dead worms in your dog's
potty after the tablet
Normal for a day or two: the tablet worked. Pick up your dog's potty daily and wash hands after.
Dog vomits within a couple
of hours of the tablet
Call your vet before giving another dose.
Vomiting or loose motion
beyond a day, or not eating
Speak to a vet the same day.
When your dog needs
the next worm tablet
The tablet gives no lasting protection. Puppies: every 2 weeks till 8 weeks, then monthly till 6 months. Outdoor adult dogs: every 3 months.

Every worm tablet is dosed by your dog's weight. After each dose, write down the date, your dog's weight and the tablet name.

A few things to avoid

  • Human deworming tablets, or another dog's tablet, for your dog.
  • Guessing your dog's weight; the worm tablet dose depends on it.
  • Deworming a vomiting or swollen-bellied puppy without a vet's advice.
  • Treating one pet and leaving the others in the house.

When help can’t wait

FOR YOUR DOG · PHYSICAL CLINIC NOW

A puppy with pale or white gums, weakness, cold paws or black tarry potty. Repeated vomiting with a swollen, painful belly. Collapse, breathing difficulty, tremors or face swelling after a worm tablet. Blood in the potty with weakness or dehydration. Do not give another tablet, and do not wait for an online appointment.

FOR YOUR FAMILY

Some dog worms can pass to people: roundworm from soil, hookworm through bare skin. Pick up your dog's potty daily, wash hands after play, wear footwear on soil your dog uses, and never feed your dog raw offal.
