Dog loose motion medicine: what is safe to give?

The short answer

Offer small amounts of water often and keep the next meal plain.

Which loose motion medicine helps depends on the cause; a vet can guide you.

Safe to do tonight

  • Give your dog small amounts of water every 20-30 minutes
  • Your dog's next meal: plain, bland, a fraction of normal
  • Check your dog's potty for mucus or fresh blood

Never give

  • Never give your dog human medicines from your medicine box
  • Leftover antibiotics or a tablet from your dog's last illness
  • Deworming tablet for loose motion: it does not treat it

When help can’t wait

See a vet today if

  • Cannot keep water down, or your dog's gums are dry
  • Loose motion beyond a day, or your dog stops eating
  • An unvaccinated or partly vaccinated puppy with loose motion
