Dog fever medicine: what can I give at home?

The short answer

Dog with fever? Check its gums in good light and look for ticks.

No human fever tablets. The right medicine depends on the cause; ask a vet.

About dog fever medicine

  • Tick fever medicine depends on which infection the blood shows
  • Some tick fevers: antibiotic tablets for several weeks
  • Dog looks better? Finish all tablets unless vet changes it

Safe to do tonight

  • Lift the dog's lip: gums should be pink, not pale
  • Look for ticks: dog's ears, collar, armpits, toes
  • Mild fever after a vaccine injection? Let the dog rest

Never give a dog with fever

  • Human fever tablets: paracetamol, ibuprofen, aspirin, never on your own
  • Leftover antibiotics or home remedies before the blood test
  • A dose copied from another dog

When help can’t wait

See a vet today if

  • Dog has fever and refuses food or seems tired
  • Dog had ticks in recent weeks, and now fever
  • Dog has unexplained bruises, or a shifting limp
  • Dog's fever not gone two days after a vaccine
