Puppy deworming schedule: when does it start?

The short answer

Start the puppy's deworming tablet at two weeks, then every two weeks.

Then monthly to six months; the vet picks product and dose by weight.

When to give the puppy's deworming dose

  • First dose at two weeks old; mother treated same day
  • Repeat every two weeks until eight weeks old
  • Then monthly until the puppy is six months old
  • Never dewormed puppy: dose 3 to 7 days before vaccine

About the puppy deworming tablet or syrup

  • Tablet or syrup: vet chooses what suits a small puppy
  • Dose is by weight; a kitchen scale is fine
  • Covers roundworm, hookworm, whipworm; not every tablet covers tapeworm

Avoid with your puppy's deworming

  • Skipping the repeat dose two weeks later
  • Human deworming tablets, or another dog's dose
  • Breeder's word alone; no written record means not dewormed

When help can’t wait

See a vet today if your puppy

  • Vomits within two hours of the tablet; ask before repeating
  • Vomiting or loose motion continues a day after the tablet
  • Stops eating after the deworming tablet
  • Pot belly on a thin puppy, or worms in vomit
