Cat scratch: is it dangerous?

The short answer

Wash the cat scratch with soap and running water, at least 15 minutes.

Unbroken skin: no rabies risk. Broken skin: see a doctor today.

Cat scratch: check the skin first

  • Rabies spreads when cat saliva gets into broken skin
  • Unbroken skin, just a red mark: no rabies risk
  • Scratch broke skin, no blood: wash, start rabies injections
  • Scratch bleeds: injections plus immunoglobulin, like a bite

If your own pet cat scratched you

  • Rabies is rare in a cat with yearly shots
  • Skin broken? Still see a doctor the same day
  • Take the cat's vaccine certificate; doctor usually starts the injection
  • Cat well on day 10? Doctor may shorten the course

If a stray or feral cat scratched you

  • Street cats that roam and fight: real rabies risk
  • Stray cat seen daily? Start injections, watch it 10 days
  • Feral cat you can't find again: full injection course

Cat scratch: never do this

  • Don't panic over a mark on unbroken skin
  • No chilli, oil, turmeric, lime or salt on the scratch
  • Skin broken? Don't wait for the cat to fall ill

When help can’t wait

See a doctor or vet if

  • Unsure of your cat's booster dates? A vet can check
  • Your cat was bitten by a street animal: vet today
  • Cat ill or missing within 10 days? Tell your doctor

Go to a clinic now

Cat suddenly hiding, striking at the air, or back legs paralysed: keep people away, call a vet before moving it.

Not sure? Ask a vet.

Wash the hands with thoroughly .Consult the dr in case of broken skin

As it is a stray cat and although there is no bleeding, it's better to take 5 dose post rabies shot.

If no blood is oozing out then no risk of rabies because of your endodermis is intact just wash your hand with warm water and clean it with cotton

Reply by Dr. Suman Pal

At first thoroughly wash the area with a good soap for at least 10-15min. I would suggest to take ARV although it's a little scratch. Because prevention is the only way for rabies.

Wash your hand immediately with tap water and soap ,clean the wound properly and go for a medical checkup

Firstly, please clean the wound thoroughly with soap and running water . After cleaning, apply povidone-iodine (Betadine). Since the injury was caused by a stray cat, please consult a doctor promptly and get assessed for post-exposure rabies vaccination and other necessary treatment

Firstly wash the wound are by running water for 30 min with antiseptic soap or betadine Then take consult with your nearby medical practitioner for proper guidance regarding this event,if he/she suggest for post-bite exposure then it should be performed

-Treat it as a possible rabies exposure. -Wash the area right away for about 15 min. Apply an antiseptic (povidone-iodine or alcohol) -Start anti-rabies vaccination (post exposure prophylaxis) Usual schedule - 0,3,7 ,14 and 28 (intramuscular)

No need to worry...take TT shot and lf any tear of skin wash with antiseptic lotions and then go for rabies vaccination

For safety you can take 3 first dose

I recommend washing the scratched area thoroughly with soap and running water for 15 minutes. Even without bleeding, assess whether the skin surface is broken. If there is any abrasion, seek prompt medical evaluation for rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) and tetanus prevention, as indicated. With rabies, timely prevention is always better than taking chances.

Wash the scratch area properly with soap for minimum 10 minutes. Add antiseptic solution like chlorhexidine on scratch area and use antibiotic ointment because cat claws contains bacteria Pasteurella multocida and Bartonella henselae. So for prevention of these zoonotic disease antiseptic washing and ointment use.

if the skin is completely intact means only a red mark or no cut or abrasion so rabies vaccination is generally not required for that contact and even if their is superficial scratch or abrasion even without bleeding then in that condition vaccination is recommended.

Wash the affected area with soap under running tap water. And if skin intact then need not to worry but if cat is not vaccinated then must take vaccine as prevention.

Yes, a cat scratch can be dangerous in some situations, but most minor scratches heal without complications. The main concerns are rabies, bacterial infection, and cat-scratch disease. 🐱 What should you do immediately? Wash the scratch with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes. Apply povidone-iodine if available. Do not apply chilli, turmeric, or other home remedies. Seek medical advice promptly if the skin is broken, especially if the cat is stray or its vaccination status is unknown.

If it's just a scratch without blood no need to worry Just wash your hand properly in running water for atleast 15 mins
